Gauge , types of gauge

#The permanent way :- The combinations of rails fitted on  sleepers and resting on bllast and sub grade is called the railway tracks or permanent way

#Gauge :- Gauge is defined as the minimum distance between two rails.


in European countries the gauge is measured between the inner face of the two rails at the a point 14mm below the top of the rail this chapter describe the different gauge widths prevalent in India and other countries it also discusses it also discuss the problem  and implication of a multiple gauge system as adopted in India


  1. Gauge on world Railways:- Various gauge have been adopted by different railway in the world due to historical and other consideration in the British railway a gauge of 1525 mm was initially adopted  but the wheel flange at the time were on the outside of railway  subsequently in order to guide the wheel  better the flange were made inside the railways the gauge the became 1435 mm gauge became the standard gauge in kmost European railway the approximate properties of various gauge on world railway are given table
